Die riesige McDonnell Douglas DC-10 ist ein dreistrahliges Großraumflugzeug und sollte die Lücke zwischen der Boeing 747 und kleineren Passagiermaschinen schließen. Mit ihren drei Triebwerken ließ sich die DC-10 auf Strecken wirtschaftlich betreiben, die für den größeren »Jumbo Jet« schlicht unrentabel waren. Sie war nach der Boeing 747 lange Zeit das häufigste und schwerste Großraumflugzeug und wurde von vielen Airlines auf Mittel- und Langstrecken betrieben. Für das Militär entstand unter anderem die Tankerversion KC-10, die bis heute im Einsatz ist. Und auch zahlreiche Frachtdienstleister fliegen die Maschine bis heute.
